The probe tool allows you to probe your drawings. That is to select an element in your drawing and identify various useful data about that element.

Additionally you can freeze or turn off the base layer of the element from within the probe tool dialogue box. This works for elements within xrefs and blocks as well - which is the real power of this little tool.
