Following a series of specific projects that commenced with the support for a noteworthy S.M. Sultan exhibition in Dhaka in 1987, Bengal Foundation formalized its involvement in the arts sector in 2000. In that year, the foundation concurrently established a dedicated arts program to oversee various nonprofit activities in the field, and it inaugurated the commercial Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts. The strategic decision for a non-profit foundation to initiate a commercial venture was motivated by the desire to contribute to the growth of a local art market, enabling artists to generate revenue and sustain their artistic endeavors. This decision was also driven by the aspiration that the production of exhibitions adhering to the highest standards of quality and their contextualization in dedicated publications would enhance the understanding and appreciation of arts within the local community. The subsequent opening of a second commercial gallery, Bengal Art Lounge, in another area of Dhaka in 2011 aimed to further these objectives. Throughout the years, both galleries have organized numerous exhibitions and participated in various international art fairs.
