My Chrysler Air Raid Siren. The Chrysler Air Raid Sirens were developed by the brilliant Bell Labs and manufactured by the Industrial Division of Chrysler. They were the most powerful warning systems ever developed and to my knowledge still are today. A 180 hp, first generation, Chrysler 331 cu. in. industrial Hemi V-8 powers a 3 stage blower at wide open throttle ( W.O.T. ), 4,600 rpm. That discharges into a 6 port chopper and the enormous soundwave exits out the 6 acoustically loaded horns. Output is 138 db at a 100 foot distance. I have heard many large powerful whistles, horns and other sirens and these Chryslers take the cake. Several hundred were made and installed in major U.S. cities, in the 1950s and 1960s, which would be a major target for their important steel and other industrial vital manufacturing. This was during the Cold War with the U.S.S.R. They were discontinued in the early 70s. These sirens are mounted on a turntable base and thru belt drive rotate at 1 1/2 rpm for full coverage. Other postings of these are run at low speed, not W.O.T., like they are supposed to be operated. I always like to have my Chrysler displayed with all the shrouds in place too. Hear mine at W.O.T., 4,600 rpm and enjoy.
