Surah Al-Inshiqaq (The Splitting Open) is the 84th chapter of the Quran, consisting of 25 verses. It's a Meccan surah that takes its name from the opening verse, which describes the splitting open of the heavens.
The surah begins with vivid descriptions of cosmic events that will occur on the Day of Judgment - the sky splitting apart, the earth being flattened and casting out its contents, and becoming empty. These dramatic images set the tone for the central theme of accountability and the afterlife.
The chapter emphasizes that every human being will inevitably meet their Lord and be held accountable for their deeds. It describes two contrasting fates: those who receive their record of deeds in their right hand will have an easy reckoning and return joyfully to their families in Paradise, while those who receive their record behind their back will face destruction and burn in the Fire.
The surah also addresses the disbelievers who reject the message, questioning why they don't prostrate when the Quran is recited to them. It concludes by affirming that Allah knows what people conceal in their hearts and promising that everyone will eventually learn what they have sent ahead for themselves.
Throughout, Al-Inshiqaq uses powerful imagery of cosmic upheaval to underscore the certainty of resurrection and divine judgment, serving as both a warning and a reminder of ultimate accountability before Allah.
