These rude Valentines came about in the 1840s in North America and quickly spread throughout the west with their shocking content. They were often used to call out "bad behaviour" by shaming the recipiant, or sent to an unwanted suitor to cool down their advances.

Many were comedic, but some were downright nasty!
What stung most was that the recipient had to pay for the postage!
