Can India Rely on Private Firms for AMCA Fighter Jet?
India’s fifth-generation fighter jet program, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), has entered a critical development phase with the submission of bids from leading defence companies. The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is overseeing the project and has invited proposals for a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to co-develop and manufacture the stealth aircraft. Key players include Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in partnership with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Adani Defence, Tata Advanced Systems, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), and Kalyani Strategic Systems.

The AMCA is designed to be a twin-engine, multirole stealth fighter with advanced avionics, internal weapons carriage, and supercruise capability. The prototype phase has been allocated a budget of ₹15,000 crore, with full-scale production expected to cost significantly more. The selected industry partner will work closely with ADA to build five prototypes over the next eight years, with the first flight targeted around 2028 and induction by 2034–35.

Initial aircraft will be powered by the GE F414 engine, while discussions are underway for joint development of a more powerful indigenous engine. The bidding process marks a major step in India’s push for self-reliance in aerospace and defence manufacturing.
