About Swami Vivekananda:
Narendranath Datta, also known as Swami Vivekananda, was a Hindu spiritual leader and reformer in India who attempted to combine Indian spirituality with Western material progress, maintaining that the two contributed to each other. A person's highest self was the Absolute; for him, the noblest endeavor was to benefit humanity.
Born into an upper-middle class family in Bengal, he was educated at a Western-style university where he learned Western philosophy, Christianity, and science. As part of his efforts to eliminate child marriage and illiteracy and spread education to all women and the lower castes, Vivekananda joined the Brahmo Samaj. He later became Ramakrishna's most notable disciple, emphasizing the unity of all religions.
During the World's Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893, he became a spokesman for Hinduism and so captivated the assembly that a newspaper described him as “an orator by divine right, undoubtedly a major figure.” His deep spiritual insight, brilliant conversation, broad understanding of humanity, colourful personality, and handsome figure resulted in an irresistible appeal to varying types of American. People who saw or heard Vivekananda even once still cherish his memory after a lapse of more than half a century.
Following his return to India in 1897, Vivekananda established the Ramakrishna Mission at the monastery of Belur Math on the Ganges River (now Kolkata) near Calcutta. His ideals were self-perfection and service. He adapted and made relevant to the 20th century the highest ideals of the Vedantic religion, and, although he lived only two years into the century, he impacted both the East and the West with his personality.
