You might have heard of the placebo effect in a disparaging way as it has a lot of bad connotations with it as it has typically been described as a deceptive technique or ‘sham’ treatment in clinical studies.

A placebo is an inert intervention and is said to delivers no active therapy. It can be used in the form of pills, injections, infusions, surgery and even DBS if the electrodes are not activated. It can also be in the form of education and exercise.

As our use of brain imaging has increased, so too has our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying the placebo effect. This is of particular importance in the field of Parkinson's disease, where clinicians have begun to recognize how profound the affect is.
