How To Spread Hard Wax - Different Methods

Where you're waxing the body will determine how you should spread the hard wax.
There are multiple different ways to spread hard wax and you definitely don’t wax all areas of the body the same.

In this video, I will explain the three main methods of how to spread hard wax.

The first method is the Side Edge Method. This method is the most common way to spread wax. You’ll use this method for areas like legs, arms, bikini line, underarms, stomach, chest and back. Dip your stick into your wax and grab wax that coats about half of your wax stick. Depending on the size of the strip you want to spread, twirl the stick in your wax to add more wax into the stick. While holding your wax stick in line with your hand, press the edge of the stick on the skin. Using plenty of pressure, push the wax stick either away or toward you (you can do either depending on the area you’re waxing). Once you get to the place where you want to end the strip, make a “lip” and then ensure the edges of the strip are clean.

The second method is the Pencil Method. This method is most common for waxing eyebrows and the upper lip. Grab some wax (on one side only) and keep it only to the end of your wax stick. Hold the stick like a pencil and press only the end of the stick to the skin. Then proceed to “draw” the wax onto the skin. Once you get to the end, you can lay the stick more flat if you need more wax to create your lip at the end of the strip.

The third method is the Paint Method. This method can be used for the labia part of a brazilian, underarms, even something like the sideburns. Dip your stick into your wax warmer and gather wax only on the end of your wax stick. Hold the stick forward in your hand like a paint brush. Then press the end of the stick against the skin and pull down. Continue to go back to the top of the strip and pull the wax down again multiple times until you feel the wax has fully adhered to the hairs. This will feel like your “painting” your client. Then you can make your lip at the end of the strip to ensure you can remove it swiftly.

All of these methods are important in order to become a successful waxer. Just remember, practice makes perfect! I recommend a silicone mat to practice your wax strips. I used to use table paper but it’s so wasteful since you can’t remove the wax and use it again. As long as you sanitize the silicone mat and wear gloves, you can practice your wax strips and then put the wax back into the warmer. This will save you so much money when practicing to perfect your skill.
