Best of Purnadas Baul Songs, is a rare collection Bengali Folk Songs. Bengali folk songs are probably the oldest form of music in Bengal. The word ‘Baul’ originates from Sanskrit word “Vatula” (madcap) or “Vyakula” (restless) and is used for someone who is crazy. Baul songs of Bengal are not only heartwarming but also it occupies the largest chunk among Bengali Folk Songs and Folk culture. A Baul is more like a Sufi, than a Himalayan Sanyasi. Purna Das Baul is a blessed son of Nabani Das, whose effort popularized the Baul Tradition quickly. Purna Das is known as Baul Samrat or the king of Bauls. He was born in the village of Ekchakka near Rampurhat in the Birbhum District of West Bengal. Purna Das Baul can be single handedly credited for spreading Baul Songs all over the world.
Purna Das Baul went to the U.S. in the late 60s. He was supported by Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and poet Alan Ginsberg and appeared on the cover of Dylan’s Album in 1968. He had won many awards from all over the globe.
Baul songs of Bengal had a great influence on Rabindranath Tagore's poetry and on his music. Baul Songs celebrate the astronomical love, but in a very earthy terms. With such a liberal interpretation of love, it is only natural that Baul devotional music transcends religion and some of the most famous baul composers, such as Lalon Fakir, criticized the superficiality of religious divisions.
