Over Christmas break I had the time to finally transcribe and memorize Peter Mazza’s arrangement of “My Romance”. It wasn’t easy, but man…His arrangements and solo playing, technique, counterpoint, and inner voice work have inspired me for a long time. Here’s a video of me playing it!

A week or two before break, while leaving a generous comment on one of my solo guitar videos, he invited me to take part in his Solo Guitar Roundtable for Professional Guitarists. Since I’m never on a gig with another guitarist, this roundtable sounded like a very intriguing way to check out more of what Peter does, and to hear and collaborate with the other players. I’ll admit that with some trepidation, that it also seemed like a great way to finally break down the walls of my long held insecurity when it comes to performing solo.

Peter describes it as an ego-free weekly meeting where professional jazz guitarists get together and get to develop new arrangements and concepts they find challenging and inspiring. Everyone gets to play them or otherwise “road test” them for each other each week. As part of this, everyone can create breakthroughs or otherwise safely “fail-forward” as he refers to it. Haha! In any case, all that, plus benefitting from the different perspectives, support and camaraderie are things that sound really motivating if not inspiring to me.

I worked up his arrangement to get myself fired up about playing solo and ready to participate in one of his upcoming roundtables happening at the end of January. I’m definitely looking forward to creating and sharing some solo pieces inspired by the experience!
