Happy Birthday - Die Würzburger Domorgel wird 50!
Zum Jubiläum spielte Domorganist Prof. Stefan Schmidt am Samstag, den 2. Februar ein Orgelkonzert auf der Klais-Orgel im Kiliansdom.
Die Hauptorgel wurde 1968 von der Firma Orgelbau Klais erbaut und 1969 fertig gestellt und am 2. Februar feierlich geweiht. Das Instrument gilt als ein Höhepunkt der deutschen Orgelneubauten der 1960er Jahre: Die klangliche Ästhetik basiert auf dem Versuch, verschiedene Stile des europäischen Orgelbaus mit eigenen, neuen Ideen zu einem insgesamt zeitgenössischen Stil zu verbinden. So findet man sowohl Einflüsse aus dem deutschen Barock als auch Register französischer und spanischer Bauart und ganz neue, einzigartige Registermischungen, die der Orgel eine außergewöhnliche Palette an Klangfarben verleihen und ein stilistisch vielseitiges Spielen ermöglichen.
Dies beweist Domorganist Prof. Stefan Schmidt einmal mehr in seinem musikalischen Jubel und Dank zum 50. Geburtstag mit Jean-Jacques Grunenwalds Jubilate Deo und Johannes Brahms' Variationen und Fuge über ein Thema von Händel in der Bearbeitung für Orgel von M. Schmeding.
Zum Abschluss improvisierte Domorganist Schmidt über 10 Versetten zur Weihe einer neuen Orgel nach einem Ritus des 18. Jahrhunderts an der Klais-Orgel.

Happy Birthday – the Würzburg cathedral organ turns 50!
In celebration of the anniversary on February 2nd 2019, cathedral organist Prof. Stefan Schmidt gave a recital on the Klais organ in St. Kilian’s cathedral in Würzburg, Germany.
The cathedral’s main organ was built in 1968 by the Orgelbau Klais company out of Bonn, Germany. The construction was finished in 1969 and the organ was consecrated on February 2nd 1969. The instrument is seen as a high point in German organ construction of the 1960ies era: its tonal aesthetic is based on an attempt to combine different styles of European organ construction with fresh, new ideas in order to create an overall contemporary style. Hence one finds influences from the German baroque, stops in French and Spanish construction type as well as wholly new and unique combinations of stops which give the instrument an extraordinary palette of tone colors and which facilitate a stylistically versatile performance.
Cathedral organist Prof. Stefan Schmidt once more demonstrated this with his musical jubilance and gratitude for the instrument’s 50th birthday with “Jubilate Deo” by Jean-Jacques Grunenwald and “Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Händel” by Johannes Brahms, edited for organ by M. Schmeding.
In conclusion, Schmidt improvised on 10 versets for the consecration of a new organ after an 18th century rite.
