Описание к видео 🎙 Transforming Neighborhoods: The Radical Hospitality of Deep Listening with De'Amon Harges

Join De'Amon Harges and host ‪@KateTucker‬ in the practice of deep listening, as De'Amon shares his experience of radical hospitality transforming neighborhoods through deep listening.

🎙 Hope Is My Middle Name season 4, episode 2 - Transforming Neighborhoods: The Radical Hospitality of Deep Listening with De'Amon Harges

From dyslexia to deep listening, De'Amon Harges transformed his life and the life of his Indianapolis neighborhood by practicing radical hospitality. As the “Original Roving Listener,” he would go door to door asking folks to tell him their stories. In listening, De'Amon discovered such a wealth of talent and opportunity on his street that he started a consulting company with his neighbors. Today The Learning Tree advises organizations and municipalities across America in developing social capital through community-centered models of growth, like Asset Based Community Development.

De'Amon is a born storyteller and a practiced listener, and he shares unconventional tips on how to get over your fears and connect with pretty much anybody. Hear why De'Amon and his neighbors got a visit from the US Surgeon General, and how they’re now building a multimillion dollar center for radical hospitality to strengthen their community for generations.

Studies show that social disconnection increases our risk for premature death as much as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. With 57% of Americans saying they don’t know their neighbor and 60% of Americans report feeling lonely, it’s no wonder the Surgeon General released a National Advisory on Loneliness and Isolation. How will we cope with the epidemic of loneliness sweeping America? The Original Roving Listener has a plan – throw a good party and get to know your neighbors!

In 2004, De'Amon Harges began going door to door in his Indianapolis neighborhood asking people to tell him their stories. As an employee of Broadway United Methodist Church, it was De'Amon’s job to uncover the gifts, talents, and dreams of his neighbors and to find ways to celebrate their gifts publically. De'Amon became known as the Original Roving Listener and would eventually train a whole team of Roving Listeners to cultivate community, economy, and mutual delight.

From a young age, De'Amon Harges understood that beyond money, there were other currencies worth tracking, like social capital, talent, trust, and generosity. He discovered such a wealth of talent in his own neighborhood that he started a company with his neighbors to consult for major municipalities and organizations across America. Today, De'Amon is a social banker. He helps institutions shift from a needs-based transactional way of handling social issues to the relational model of Asset Based Community Development, bringing institutions like the US Surgeon General’s office out of boardrooms and onto front porches to hear directly from the people they intend to serve.

In this episode, De'Amon draws from the storytelling heritage of his grandparents and the musical expression of his parents, inviting us to discover the rich stories, gifts, and dreams that live behind the doors of our own neighborhood. By the end of our conversation, we’re feeling a little less lonely, and a lot more connected.
