One of the most important contributing factors to your SEO success is linking. Google loves linking, it shows you are a trusted site with authority. It is easy to do, effective and does not take a lot of technical knowledge.

Linking is exactly what it sounds like, placing links that direct visitors to other areas of your website or to other trusted websites - and vice versa.

3 ways to go about it.

Internal linking, external linking, and “black hat” linking.

Internal and external linking are good, black hat is bad.

Link building has always been important but now it is more important than ever, Google’s mysterious algorithm will downgrade your site if it determines that you are not using links correctly.

High quality links boost your authority to Google but black hat links could get your site suspended.

It is critical that linking be natural and not excessive. Inbound links should be high quality and from reputable sources. Preferably from industry recognized websites.

Internal linking - Linking within your site to other areas in your site. For example, if you have a blog that mentions your services, connect it to older blogs and as many pages as you can on your website. Internal linking makes it easier for the Google bots to crawl your site and find new content. Google loves new content.

External Linking - Can be a bit more tricky. Effective external linking can mean sending emails, providing guest content, and maybe some shameless begging. Acquiring high quality external links can take a bit of hustle but they are well worth it. If you can get a trusted source to link back to your site that is SEO gold. So make some calls and see if you can

Black hat Linking - Bottom line, don't do it. Black hat links are any kind of link that can be considered spam. We have all seen it in our social media when someone leaves a comment and drops a link in there. That is not the way you want to generate links to your site. Google hates that.

Make your link building natural, think about the user experience if you are dropping terms like UX in your blogs, be sure to link to a resource that explains what exactly UX is. Make the experience interactive and informative for the site visitor and Google will smile upon you.

The bottom line is to make Google happy while increasing your authority in the industry. Internal links make the Google spiders happy, external links increase your visibility and black hat links will get you in trouble.
