Msewe, a dance prominent in North Pemba, specifically in the Mchangamdogo area, plays a significant role in the rich tapestry of ngoma. Ngoma, literally meaning 'drum,' serves as an umbrella term encompassing various traditional African dance, drumming, and singing forms. In North Pemba, msewe supports the rhythm section, named after the material strapped to the ankles of male dancers.

The ngoma styles in Tanzania, including those originating from Zanzibar and Pemba, are diverse, with subtle variations. The captivating performances feature handmade drums, percussion instruments like oil tins beaten with a stick, and dancers adorned in elaborate native costumes, highlighting the unity of their steps and rhythms. Msewe, as an example, contributes to the rhythm section and is distinguished by the material attached to the male dancers' ankles.

Each ngoma style boasts a unique costume. In kyaso, men dance wearing shirts and kikois, a special woven cloth from the East African coast, accompanied by a long, narrow stick. Ndege showcases women in colourful dresses holding bright umbrellas, moving forward with slightly rotating steps and hip movements. Bomu sees women dressed in men's attire and other humorous costumes, dancing in a circle.

The endless variations ensure that ngoma performances are never dull. Abdalla R Mdoe, the choreographer for Imani Ngoma Troupe, a privately initiated ensemble specializing in ngoma, identifies three main types: ceremonial ngomas for weddings and festivities, ritual ngomas like kisomali for healing and pungwa to ward off evil, and performances remain vibrant and culturally rich.
