Im Frühjahr 1987 trat Santana gemeinsam mit Buddy Miles im "Palast der Republik" mit ihrem „Freedom“ Konzert in Ost-Berlin auf, wo sie euphorisch gefeiert wurden. Die Fans standen schon 48 Stunden vorher an, um eine der wenigen frei verfügbaren Eintrittskarten zu bekommen. Carlos Santana sagte später zu diesem Konzert: „Wenn man vor 55.000 Hippies spielt, ist das nichts Besonderes, man gehört ja dazu. Aber vor einem Publikum mit kurzen Haaren, anderen Denkmustern und die noch keinen Hasch geraucht haben, das fordert stärker heraus. Deshalb war dies mein bestes Konzert zu dieser Zeit.“
