A majority of job-related eye injuries occur through not wearing or having inadequate eye protection.

Injuries from chemicals, burns, UV radiation or flying particles such as dust, metal or wood can be avoided by wearing the correct eye protection as specified in Australian and New Zealand Standards 1337 and 1338.

When choosing eyewear protection think about the following:
1. What is the nature of risk to your eyes? Is it UV rays from welding? Chemicals splashing into your eyes or flying fragments?
2. What are the conditions you will be working in?
3. What are the visual requirements of the task?
4. What is your personal preference in the way of comfort, style, weight, ventilation?
5. What is your eyesight like?

Wear medium safety specs for medium impact velocity or, for high impact protection, wear medium impact safety specs with a high impact faceshield. Consult the Standards, BOC, or manufacturer's guidance on the right impact rating for your application.

For greater protection it is recommended that the worker wear goggles, wide-vision specs or goggles, even an eyeshield or faceshield. For gas welding ensure that the correct shade lens is used or a welding helmet.

It is important that eyewear is fitted correctly for maximum protection and comfort. The closer the eyewear fits to the user's face the better.

If you require protection against excessive sun glare or glare from visible radiation, then a tinted lens should be used.

Identify and eliminate any eye injury risks at work and introduce a safety program. Where it's not possible to eliminate or control risks, then personal eye protection should be worn at all times.
