After the commercial success of Common's (@common) major label debut "Like Water For Chocolate" (2000) the MC was in the position to expand his horizons into acting. In 2003, he made sitcom appearances on UPN's Girlfriends and One on One. His big screen debut was in the 2007 crime film Smokin' Aces, followed by roles in American Gangster and Wanted in 2008. Common continued to diversify his roles, appearing in Date Night (2010) and joining the ensemble cast of AMC's Hell on Wheels. He played significant roles in Now You See Me (2013), Selma (2014), Suicide Squad (2016), and John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017). Common received critical acclaim for his role in All About Nina (2018) and starred in The Hate U Give (2018). His Broadway debut was announced for the winter of 2022 in Second Stage Theater’s Between Riverside and Crazy.

Following disappointing sales and mixed critical reviews for his 2002 album Electric Circus, Common's musical trajectory experienced another resurrection, thanks to fellow Chicagoan Kanye West. Their collaboration on Be (2005) and Finding Forever (2007) marked significant successes. Despite the underperformance of Universal Mind Control (2008), produced by The Neptunes, Common returned to his roots with The Dreamer / The Believer (2011), reaffirming his position as a conscious wordsmith. With a burgeoning acting career, Common began viewing music not just as a financial necessity but as a means of uninhibited creative expression. Thus, subsequent albums—Nobody's Smiling (2014), Black America Again (2016), Let Love (2019), and A Beautiful Revolution Pts. 1 & 2 (2020, 2021)—served as both statements of intent and showcases of quality craftsmanship.

Overall, it's a combination of his lyrical skill, social consciousness, versatility, consistency, positive image, and cultural impact that makes Common stand out as a nugget of awesomeness.
