🇯🇵🇨🇳 Beginning in 1904, Japan initiated a systematic colonial project in Northeast China that spanned nearly three decades. Over the following thirty-plus years, approximately 300,000 Japanese civilians, predominantly farmers, were relocated to the region under state-sponsored settlement initiatives known as the “Pioneer Emigration Plan.”
In 1945, following Japan’s unconditional surrender, vast numbers of these Japanese settlers—particularly those affiliated with the emigration program—were abandoned by their government and stranded in China. Many were even declared “deceased” unilaterally by the Japanese authorities in 1959.
Amid the turmoil, nearly 5,000 Japanese children who lost their parents were compassionately adopted by Chinese families—a profound testament to humanity’s capacity to transcend the scars of war.

📺 This documentary traces, over four postwar decades, the protracted and painful journey of the “Japanese Orphans Left in China” as they struggled to return to Japan and reclaim their citizenship.Caught between two cultures and haunted by the legacy of war, they faced institutional neglect, social discrimination, and a deeply fractured sense of identity.Their lives became a silent questioning—a search for answers that never came: What is home? And what is exile?
