The terms Nritta, Nritya and Natya - abstract, expressive and dramatic dance - are revised.

The importance of the Natya Shastra in the study of dance is indicated. Rasa (sentiment) and Bhava (emotion) are meticulously detailed drawing references from verses of the Natya Shastra and with practical demonstrations. The importance of Sthayi Bhava (dominant Emotion), Vibhava (Determinant), Anubhava (Consequents) and Vyabhichari Bhava (Transitory states) - are related.

Four methods of Abhinaya – Angik, Vachik, Aharya and Sattivik with their focus on actions, words, costumes and mental states – together with the two styles – Lokadharmi (natural) and Natyadharmi (stylized) – are clarified. Variations in the mode of presentation, the four Vrittis – Bharati (scholarly), Sattvati (energetic), Kaishiki (romantic) and Arabhati (exciting and deceitful) - are explained.

The importance of the Nayaka and Nayika and their various types are stated.
