Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS, the third known visitor from beyond our Solar System, reached its perihelion (closest point to the Sun) on October 29, 2025, passing inside Mars’ orbit at approximately 1.4 astronomical units (210 million kilometers) from the Sun.
As of October 31, 2025, the comet remains largely obscured:
• Visibility Status: Visibility from Earth is limited until November because the comet is almost directly opposite our planet, hidden by the Sun's glare.
• Peak Viewing: Astronomers expect peak visibility for Earth observers between mid-November and early December 2025.
Scientific Revelations and Anomalies:
• Extraordinary Composition: Data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Hubble have revealed key details. JWST detected high levels of carbon dioxide, water, and nickel. The detection of nickel and high carbon dioxide levels are considered unusual compared to comets native to our Solar System.
• Interstellar Origin: The 'I' designation confirms its interstellar nature, meaning it originated outside our solar system. It follows a hyperbolic orbit and will never loop back towards the Sun, serving as a time capsule from another star system.
• Velocity: The comet is moving at an estimated speed of nearly 221,000 kilometers per hour (60 km/s), significantly faster than typical solar comets.
• Artificial Hypothesis: While mainstream interpretations view 3I/ATLAS as a chemically unusual fragment, its peculiarities—including strong outgassing at considerable distances and the revival of theories concerning potential extraterrestrial technology or engineered probes (similar to the hypothesis for 1I/ʻOumuamua)—continue to generate speculative debate.
The comet maintains a safe distance, with its closest approach to Earth expected in December 2025, at about 270 million km.
