Spelling difficulties

Описание к видео Spelling difficulties

English spelling can be a source of great frustration for a child who is learning how to read and write. But when difficulties persist beyond the first few years of school, a language-based specific learning difference could be the cause of the trouble. Estimates suggest 1 in ten people struggles with some form of dyslexia, which also affects reading ability.

In this video Jo Crawford, an inspirational and ‘delightfully dyslexic’ ambassador for the British Dyslexia Association explains more about spelling difficulties and what happens in the brain when we go to spell a word.

Tips and Tricks for Improving Spelling

1. Try kinesthetic and visual learning - e.g. drawing words in sand or cutting out words and sticking them on colorful paper
2. Use a touch-typing program such as Touch-type Read and Spell (TTRS) to get a multi-sensory learning experience. Hear the word, see it on the screen and press the corresponding letters on the keyboard until the sequence of keys becomes automatic
3. Learn high frequency sound and letter combinations - use games to promote the link between the letter(s) and sound(s)
4. Read - seeing words on a page can help you learn them and improve your ability to produce them in writing

“...but most importantly, enjoy what you’re doing. Learning should be a fun experience and it’s the best way to retain information.” - Jo Crawford
