Luxon aims to strengthen New Zealand's ties and explore new trade opportunities with hundreds of millions of consumers. He plans to sign a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN nations, upgrading their current agreement. This could lead to closer cooperation, smoother trade, increased development aid, and more academic scholarships.
During the East Asia Summit, Luxon secured bilateral meetings with leaders from Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Timor Leste, with more meetings to be confirmed. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established in 1967 to strengthen cooperation and advance the region's interests in trade and diplomacy.
