Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has warned that the European Union is “shooting itself in the knee” with its Russian energy ban, calling the REPowerEU initiative “complete nonsense.” Speaking at the European Nuclear Energy Forum (ENEF) in Bratislava, Fico criticised the EU’s ideologically driven approach, saying it undermines European competitiveness and risks energy security. Fico emphasised Slovakia’s reliance on Russian nuclear fuel for its Soviet-designed reactors, highlighting that the country generates around 60% of its electricity from nuclear power. He also outlined plans for a new reactor at Bohunice and stressed the importance of nuclear energy for Slovakia’s industrial growth.
