В своей лекции Саймон Рейнольдс рассказывает о главных тезисах книги «Ретромания. Поп-культура в плену собственного прошлого», которая появилась на полках книжных магазинов пять лет назад, и делится своими наблюдениями о том, что изменилось в музыкальной индустрии за этот период.

Также Саймон представляет свою новую книгу «Шок и трепет», в которой он анализирует общее между глэм-роком 1970-х и современной поп-музыкой и затрагивает темы славы, нарциссизма, декаданса и апокалиптического отчаяния.

Лекция – часть музыкального форума Selector PRO, организованного Британским Советом совместно с Институтом медиа, архитектуры и дизайна «Стрелка» 21-23 июля в Москве.

Lecture by Simon Reynolds “Everything is a remix: why music dwells on the past”

Simon Reynolds talks about Retromania five years on – trying to work out what has changed in the half-decade since the book was first published in English. The talk briefly reprises the basic argument of the book and examines various things that became clearer to Simon during the years of talks and interviews around the book that followed. For instance, he discusses and takes issue with the fashionable concept that “everything is a remix”, an approach that he calls “recreativity” and which asserts that originality and innovation are not only outmoded concepts but have never been true descriptions of how artists create.

Simon also presents his forthcoming book ‘Shock and Awe’, which connects Seventies glam rock to contemporary pop by tracing their shared themes of fame, narcissism, decadence and apocalyptic despair.
