Fifteen contributors have come together to update the previous fourth edition of this important which had been published in 2012. Much has dramatically changed within the telecommunications industry in the early part of the 21st century because of considerable developments in technology and globalisation so a new edition is gratefully received.

Professor Ian Walden, from Queen Mary, University of London, writes that the telecommunications sector “continues to be of strategic importance to states, both as an activity in its own right as well as an infrastructure over which trade is carried out.” And much change will surely come in the next few years with demand (and regulation) increasing in this area.

Since the fourth edition of this book was published, numerous changes have occurred in the telecommunications sector, at a national, European, and international level. Such inevitable changes are brilliantly brought together in this book which was originally and primarily designed for the Masters course in Telecommunications Law. And, thankfully, the title remains both an important publication for academics and researchers, and a useful practical text for lawyers.

The new 2018 edition of “Telecommunications Law and Regulation” takes many recent changes into account, including an important examination of the adoption of Directive 2014/61/EU on the measures to reduce to cost of deploying electronic communication networks.

The team of writers also review Directive 2014/53/EU on radio equipment; Regulation 2015/2120 on 'open internet access' and roaming and the implications of Brexit on the UK telecommunications sector with Brexit Day, 29th March 2019, fast approaching.

There is also useful coverage of substantial regulatory developments in US law since 2012, including the FCC's order on 'Protecting and Promoting the Open Internet' from March 2015. We feel that the details provided by these specialist leading experts remains impeccable as essential reading for legal practitioners and academics involved in the telecommunications industry at all levels.
