How to Find North in Google Maps

To find North in Google Maps, begin by opening the application on your smartphone or tablet. Your current location will be marked by a prominent blue dot on the map. Look for the compass icon, typically situated on the right side of the screen. Tapping this compass icon cycles through different map orientations. The first tap will usually center the map on your current position. Tapping it a second time will activate "North Up" mode. In this mode, the map automatically rotates so that the top of your device's screen always points directly North. The compass icon itself will also clearly indicate North, often with a red arrow or a highlighted segment pointing in that direction. If the compass icon isn't visible, try tapping the blue location dot, which might reveal an option to calibrate the compass, or simply move your phone slightly until the icon appears. Once in North Up mode, you can easily orient yourself by knowing that the top edge of your phone or tablet is facing true North.
