But Not For Me - Paul Young Vocal Duets #11, Courtney Fortune

“But, this one goes to eleven...”
This began as a guilty pleasure project idea, in July 2017: to ask a few pro singer friends if they might sing a tune with me, for fun... Naturally, they "win" , since I am trombone player and not a pro singer like them, they know that! And the goal here was never to make a demo, get vocal gigs, gain fans... I just love these folks' musical talent, friendship, and often sing in the car on the way home after a gig, feeling inspired... So I figured I'd get a little silly with a short list of such buddies, set a couple dates in motion, explain this totally unnecessary idea to each of them...and if they could do one of the two days, great - come on over! No rehearsals were done with anyone (I bet you can tell, especially if you watch me - ha!). We just tried it a couple of times straight through with each person. No edits, overdubs, splices, etc. after that. We agreed to either share the results, or delete it! Well, I never assumed more than a few of my friends'' schedules would line up, nor would many want their names/voices out there next to me, doing this! But this somehow became ten (10!) videos, recorded back to back, on July 21 and 25, 2017 (the only exception was the last one I posted, with Patrice Rushen and two of my USC students in Dec. 2017)...So, to quote the movie, Spinal Tap: This one goes to eleven!

And I’m pleased to be able to share this one now - the LAST duet in this homemade series, from nearly two years ago(!), featuring my friend, the magnificent, Courtney Fortune.

Courtney and I first met as professor and student at USC, 10-+ years ago. She is a proud graduate of the USC Thornton School’s Music Industry Program, where I've taught 15 years to date (though, I'm moving on to a new university this fall, so stay tuned for that news update...if you care!). So you can imagine my delight to have had our musical paths continued to cross, musically, as some things have come full circle here for me..but this was not our only gig, since USC! Here’s a clip from another such cool moment that she and I shared in between the years in between, which features an original song of hers, with a great L.A. band, at Capitol Records Studio A, with engineer, Al Schmitt, for our esteemed band leader / arranger, the unmatched: Chris Walden

My sincere gratitude goes out to Courtney, Sam, Chris, Pete, Nick...and all of my L.A. friends who played a part in these videos for me - the trombone guy - to allow me the simple fun of singing a tune with these pros.
AND my sincere gratitude goes out to my lovely wife, Jana, and our daughter, Adria, who also had put up with me learning how to do all this tedious stuff just for some YouTube fun!
