Struggling with hair loss and wondering whether it's because of your hormones? You're not alone!
Hi, I’m Dr. Namrata Puttur from HairMD Pune – and today, we’re diving into a very important topic: Is your hair loss due to Hyperthyroidism or DHT? 🔍
Hair loss can feel scary and confusing. One day you notice more strands on your pillow or comb, and suddenly you’re asking Google all sorts of questions! But before you panic, it’s important to understand what’s happening inside your body. Both DHT and thyroid hormones play huge roles in hair health – but they cause hair loss in very different ways.

What is Hyperthyroidism?
Hyperthyroidism means your thyroid gland is overactive – it produces too much thyroid hormone. Think of it like your body's engine running at double speed! This can cause symptoms like weight loss, fast heartbeat, anxiety, and yes – significant hair thinning. In hyperthyroidism, hair loss usually appears as diffuse thinning all over the scalp, rather than patchy bald spots. Your hair might look finer, weaker, and fall out more easily. If you are feeling more tired, nervous, or losing weight unexpectedly – your thyroid could be behind your hair problems!
What is DHT?
DHT stands for Dihydrotestosterone – a hormone derived from testosterone. While DHT plays important roles in male development, excess DHT can shrink hair follicles over time, leading to androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss). Unlike hyperthyroidism, DHT-related hair loss usually follows a distinct pattern – a receding hairline, thinning at the crown in men, and widening of the hair part in women. DHT attacks genetically sensitive hair follicles, slowly miniaturizing them until they stop producing healthy hair.
Area or Pattern of Hairfall in Male and Female
The pattern of hair loss offers crucial clues about the cause.
Hyperthyroidism: Generalized thinning all over the scalp. Hair becomes fragile and sheds easily.
DHT: Specific areas affected – receding temples, thinning crown, and widening hair part in women.
Recognizing these differences early can help doctors recommend the right treatment. If your hairline is changing shape or your ponytail is looking thinner, it’s time to investigate deeper!
What are the Tests for Hyperthyroidism or DHT?
To differentiate between DHT and hyperthyroidism hair loss, doctors advise simple but powerful tests:
For Hyperthyroidism: Blood tests like TSH, Free T3, and Free T4 help measure thyroid function.
For DHT: Blood DHT levels, and scalp examination (trichoscopy) are used. In some cases, your dermatologist may also recommend additional hormonal panels or scalp biopsies to make sure the diagnosis is 100% accurate.
Conclusion:
Hair loss can feel overwhelming, but the right diagnosis gives you control. Whether it's hyperthyroidism or DHT, both conditions have effective treatments today. Early intervention is key. Don't waste time experimenting with random shampoos or supplements. Talk to an expert, get your tests done, and start your journey to stronger, healthier hair!
