Old Coleman lanterns, how to function test before you buy

Find an old Coleman lantern for sale? Before you drop money on it, you should know how to function test it to give you a good idea of the type of repairs it may need, or see if it's likely to work for you. Since a store owner won't let you start tearing apart a lantern in the store to inspect the insides, I came up with this short method of testing a lantern that is "shop owner friendly" and generally perfectly fine to do in a thrift shop, flea market etc. This is the best way I've found to test the different parts of the lantern without taking it apart to troubleshoot the problems it may have. It's not perfect, and it's impossible to know if the lantern will work perfectly until you fire it up, but a lantern in good working order WILL pass this test.
