this video details why i've personally found more benefit from reading literature than i did from reading self-help books. perhaps importantly, i went through a 'self-help phase', read many of the classics and popular texts of the genre, and found whatever new material i read to be repetitive. this helped initially but then i found that reading more didn't improve my relationship with the ideas. until i got back into literature, which really helped 'bring the ideas to life'.
