If you’re visiting Mexico City, you have to take a day trip to Grutas Tolantongo! Now we’ve all seen the photos and videos of famous pools there, but did you know it has heated caves and a river? The hot springs were developed into a full waterpark by the Sociedad Cooperativa Ejidal Grutas Tolantongo, a group of 112 local indigenous families that live in the area and own the lands. I love that it’s a community run tourist attraction so the whole area benefits from the profits of the park and the surrounding hotels and restaurants.

A few tips for your day trip to Grutas Tolantongo:
This hot spring/water park hybrid is a 3.5-4 hour drive outside of Mexico City so whether you rent a car, or book a tour like I did (I used Tripadvisor), prepare to be up early like 5am to get there before the crowds.
The entry cost is 230 MXN pesos, so about $12-13. There are bathrooms, showers and dressing rooms for you can change on the property. There is WIFI, because its a remote area so you may not get cell service, but you have to pay for it.
You can zipline, hike and even camp on the property, but there’s also a hotel if you want to stay overnight right at the park.
Bring water shoes and a waterproof phone case if you want to enter the caves and a headlamp if you wanted to enter the deep, dark portion. My tour guide provided the headlamp + phone case and had a stop on the route to rent water shoes. If you want the link to the tour I did, let me know in the comments and I can send it your way!
