Mithridates VI, also known as Mithridates the Great, was the ruler of Pontus, a region located in what is now northeastern Turkey. He was a skilled military strategist and sought to expand his kingdom at the expense of Rome's territories in Asia Minor.
The First Mithridatic War (89–85 BC) began when Mithridates VI took advantage of Rome's distractions with internal conflicts, particularly the Social War (91–88 BC), to seize control of Roman territories in Asia Minor. The war ended with a Roman victory under the leadership of generals Lucius Cornelius Sulla and Lucius Licinius Murena.
