Gorilla family drama unfolds as Ozala charges, Shufai pushes Grandma Biddy down a slope, and Asante navigates the chaos. Tense, playful, and unpredictable gorilla behaviour
Gorilla Ozala peeks around the corner at her mum, moving slowly and looking tense. Oumbi stays relaxed in the corner. Then Shufai appears, holding Grandma Biddy before pushing her down the slope. To top off Biddy’s misery, Ozala charges and lands a punch to her head. The video also includes a close-up of Asante, ending with Shufai doing a Lope, nudging Asante as she walks through the door. This footage highlights playful, tense, and unpredictable gorilla behaviour.

ℹ️ Did you know:
Oumbi is a direct descendant of some of the strongest male lines in captive gorilla history. His father, Bitam, was a Howletts-born silverback, sired in the wild, and a leading figure in the European breeding programme.
Bitam fathered many prominent offspring at Howletts, including Biju, Tamba, Ambam and Oumbi — making Biju and Oumbi half-brothers (same father, different mothers).
Biju went on to Japan, where he sired Momotaro. This makes Oumbi the half-uncle of Momotaro.
Momotaro later sired Gentaro, making Gentaro Oumbi’s half-great-nephew.
Through his father Bitam, Oumbi carries the strong Howletts legacy.
Through his half-brother Biju, nephew Momotaro, and great-nephew Gentaro, Oumbi is also connected to the Japanese Kyoto and Ueno lines.
This positions Oumbi as a male linking two major bloodlines — the Howletts Tam/Bitam line and the Kyoto Biju/Momotaro line — a connection between two of the most influential breeding programmes in Europe and Japan.
You can see Tamba here 👉 • Famous Upright Walking Female Gorilla Tamb...
(Tamba is Bitam’s daughter and Oumbi’s half-sister.)
Lope, born at Twycross Zoo in 2013, is Oumbi’s son.
This makes Lope the grandson of Bitam and the great-nephew of Biju.
Through this, Lope stands directly in line with both the European Howletts bloodline and the Japanese Kyoto line.
Shufai (also known as Mijadala at birth), born in 2016 at Twycross Zoo, is the youngest son of Oumbi and Ozala — and the younger brother of Lope.
Shufai shares the same combined Howletts and Kyoto bloodlines, carrying forward this legacy.
✅ Summary:
Oumbi is son of Bitam and half-brother of Biju.
Oumbi is the half-uncle of Momotaro (son of Biju).
Gentaro (son of Momotaro) is Oumbi’s half-great-nephew.
Tamba is Oumbi’s half-sister (also sired by Bitam).
Lope and Shufai are Oumbi’s sons, carrying both Howletts and Kyoto bloodlines.
These family ties link the strongest breeding programmes in Europe and Japan — a legacy recognised across both regions.
