Yathi | Season Unnikrishnan

In this unusual composition, a depiction of Lord Shiva’s Ananda tandava or dance of ecstasy is seen. This keerthanam highlights the innately spiritual and conceptual aspects of nritta or pure movement . It is based on the rhythmic concept of yati, one of the ten dasaprana or life- breaths, of tala or beat cycle. Relating to the disposition of several angas and specific patterns for finishing a rhythmic combination within talam. This raga-tala-malika composed by the late S Rajaram of Kalakshetra showcases five different Yatis: Sama yati, Mridanga yati, Damaru Yati, Gopucha Yati and Srothovaha Yati, each with its own distinct geometric and rhythmic arrangement.
