In this Bonsai video I share with you some Pruning and Shaping Ideas on an Itoigawa Juniper Bonsai that I have been working on over the past three years! This is PART 4 of the progression of this Bonsai.

This bonsai is approaching its final stages of refinement. In this video I discuss using copper wire for maximum control and precision. Copper wire not only provides stronger holding power than aluminium but also creates a cleaner, more refined appearance. Because copper is stronger, you can use a thinner gauge to secure the same branch thickness that would require a much thicker aluminium wire (I also think it looks a lot nicer!).

In this video, I walk you through exactly why I’ve chosen the tools, wire thicknesses, and pruning techniques you’ll see me using. I’ll explain my reasoning for selecting copper wire over aluminium, how I decide on the correct gauge for each branch, and why I’m pruning at this particular time of year. I also address some of the structural challenges with this tree, including competing trunk lines and handlebar branches, and show you the methods I’m using to resolve them.
