If you notice a persistent swelling in this region for weeks or months accompanied by facial pain, numbness, stiffness, or weakness it may be due to pressure on the facial nerve that runs through the parotid gland. These could be signs of a parotid tumour.

Diagnosis
Patients often experience a lump in the parotid region. To investigate further, we perform an ultrasound or MRI scan. If the imaging confirms swelling or a mass in the parotid gland, we proceed with an FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) to determine whether it is an infection, a benign tumour, or cancer.

Common Types of Parotid Tumours
Most parotid tumours are benign. The two most common types are
Pleomorphic Adenoma
Warthin’s Tumour

Pleomorphic adenomas typically arise from the superficial lobe of the parotid gland, which lies above the facial nerve.
Treatment Approach
In most cases, surgical removal is necessary not just of the tumour but of the entire superficial lobe of the parotid gland. This procedure is called a Superficial Parotidectomy, which is the standard treatment for most parotid tumours. If only the tumour is removed and not the surrounding lobe, there is a high risk of recurrence.

Concerns About Saliva Production
Many patients worry that removing part of the parotid gland may reduce saliva production. This is not true the deep lobe of the parotid gland, which is left intact, is primarily responsible for producing saliva. Therefore, patients do not experience dryness after surgery.

Why Early Treatment Matters
If a pleomorphic adenoma is left untreated, it has the potential to become cancerous in the future. If it turns malignant, treatment becomes more complex and may involve radiotherapy or chemotherapy, in addition to surgery.
