Here’s the link to the video which shows you how to install Cinestyle on your Canon EOS camera: https://bit.ly/2NuXuzx

The other day I found out about Technicolor Cinestyle, which is a free picture profile that you can install on your Canon EOS camera. Apparently it’s been around for years, but I’ve only just heard about it.

I’m interested in achieving the best possible video quality from my Canon EOS M50 so I decided to give it a go. I’m by no means a colour expert - I was just curious to find out whether there was much benefit to using Cinestyle.

Up until now I’ve been using the built in neutral picture profile, with the contrast, saturation and sharpness dialled all the way down to try to get a flat look. The idea behind this is to get the maximum amount of dynamic range, which in theory gives you the most flexibility when you colour grade as you should have some extra shadow and highlight detail to work with.

I can tell straight away that Cinestyle is definitely way flatter than neutral, but there’s also some banding visible in the sky. I think it might be because the Canon EOS M50 shoots 8-bit colour, and that’s not holding up well to such a flat profile as Cinestyle.

Then again, it could just because I was filming in a very high contrast scenario. Maybe Cinestyle is better indoors or controlled lighting environments.

What do you think? Have you got any Cinestyle tips? Let me know in the comments!

And stick around a bit longer into the video for a demo of the Canon EOS M50’s in-built time lapse feature, some 100fps 720p so motion footage and some stills photos with the EF-M 14-45mm kit lens.
