In Valmiki’s Ramayana

In the original Valmiki Ramayana, there is no mention of Mandodari marrying Vibhishana.

After Ravana is slain, Mandodari mourns him deeply in the famous Mandodari Vilapam (lament of Mandodari).

Vibhishana is crowned king of Lanka by Rama, but Mandodari’s fate is left unstated.

In Later & Regional Ramayanas

Krittivasi Ramayana (Bengali version, 15th century) — States that Rama advised Mandodari to marry Vibhishana to ensure political stability in Lanka, and she agreed.

Ananda Ramayana — Mentions the same, portraying the marriage as a way to unify Lanka after the war.

Some South Indian folk traditions — Especially in Tamil and Kannada tellings, the marriage is symbolic of Lanka’s continued connection with the Ikshvaku dynasty through Vibhishana’s alliance with Rama.

Possible Reasons in the Narrative

Political Stability — Marrying the former queen to the new king ensured legitimacy and reduced chances of rebellion from Ravana’s loyalists.

Dharma & Protection — A widowed queen in ancient epics is often given protection through remarriage within the same royal family.

Moral Message in Later Texts — In bhakti-influenced retellings, Mandodari is shown as virtuous, and marrying Vibhishana (a dharmic king) symbolizes her entry into a righteous household.
