What’s so special about Japanese Marking Gauges?

Описание к видео What’s so special about Japanese Marking Gauges?

If you haven't given up on hand tools yet, the continuing indispensable tool in your toolbox would be the Marking gauges.

A marking gauge is a simple tool used to scribe one or two parallel lines onto a piece of wood. These lines enable precise cuts when resawing or tight-fitting joinery that will stand the test of time.
Sure, power tool-focused builders might be able to do without one, but given its expensive cost, then a simple $10 model is great to get you started.

Japanese marking gauges are generally similar to Western counterparts. Except for the mortise gauge, all Japanese gauges use blades instead of pins. The blade of the cutter leaves scratches finer marks than a pin. In addition, because the blade is beveled, it is not necessary to create an angle for the gauge to avoid tearing when cutting across the grain, in such a way that you must have a marking gauge having a pin.

Most marking gauges are adjusted in the same way. The gauge is held in the left hand with pins or blades beveled up to check the distance from the fence. If pins or blades are too close to the fence, you can easily tap the beam out with a downward stroke of the hammer, but if you need to bring the pins or blades closer to the fence, tap the beam with a hammer. Besides, use a horizontal stroke to reduce the risk of slipping and hitting the pins or blades.

Most marking gauges are adjusted in the same fashion. To check the distance from the fence. Hold the marking gauge in the left hand with pins or blade bevel up (left). Tap the beam (top) with a hammer to move the pins out of the fence. To tap pins in, use the side of the hammer (bottom) to reduce the risk of slipping and hitting the pins.
