Planting has begun to connect the Koputai wetland to the Firth of Thames through an ecological corridor along the Piako River.

The Piako River Green Corridor project was awarded $2.8 million in funding through Ministry for the Environment’s Jobs for Nature fund. It will create nature-based jobs to plant quarter of a million plants and retire 35 hectares of land along 36 kilometres of riparian margin.

This World Rivers Day (Sunday 26 Sept) celebrates the importance of rivers and encourages people to care for their local rivers. This project is a great example of the community coming together to improve the health of their awa.

The first kilometre has been planted with 18,000 plants along the Piako River.

The plants will stabilise banks to reduce sediment, provide more shaded areas for native fish and create more habitat for wildlife.

The collaborative project, led by Waikato Regional Council, includes representatives from iwi, the Department of Conservation, Hauraki District Council, drainage committees and the Waihou-Piako Flood Protection Advisory Subcommittee.

Pauline Clarkin of Ngāti Hako said “it will take all of us to restore the lands of this area and the waterways of this area, so we look forward to working with others.”
