The ruling NDA government started the Bharatmala project, a mammoth initiative to build roads across the country. Road transport and highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced in January 2020 that government will build 16 greenfield expressways and 6 (brownfield) expressways. 3 of these will be completed by 2022 - Delhi Mumbai greenfield expressway, Trans Haryana greenfield expressway, Trans Rajasthan greenfield expressway. State governments have also rolled out such plans. UP govt under the-then CM Akhilesh Yadav built Agra-Lucknow greenfield expressway. Now Yogi Adityanath government is planning to build Ganga expressway, which was a brainchild of Mayawati. The Uddhav Thackeray led Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra will build Konkan greenfield expressway, which will boost tourism in that area, provide an international market for local goods and provide employment opportunities.
