3. Protect the client's eyes: Provide the client with appropriate eye protection, such as goggles or eye shields, to ensure their safety during the procedure.
4. Adjust the laser settings: Set the Nd:YAG laser according to the client's skin and hair type. Adjust the laser parameters, such as wavelength, fluence (energy level), and pulse duration, to achieve optimal results while minimizsng the risk of side effects.
5. Test patch: Perform a small test patch on the client's skin to assess their reaction and determine the appropriate energy level. Monitor the area for any adverse reactions over a 24 to 48-hour period before proceeding with the full treatment.
6. Treatment session: During the treatment, the Nd:YAG laser emits light pulses that are absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair follicles. This absorption generates heat, which damages the follicles and inhibits future hair growth. Move the laser handpiece over the treatment area, overlapping the pulses slightly to ensure full coverage.
7. Cooling and discomfort management: To minimise discomfort and protect the skin, use a cooling device, such as a cold air blower or a chilled gel, before and after each laser pulse. Some Nd:YAG lasers also have built-in cooling mechanisms.
8. Post-treatment care: After the session, advise the client to apply a soothing cream or gel to alleviate any redness or mild swelling. Instruct them to avoid sun exposure, hot baths, saunas, and vigorous exercise for a couple of days following the treatment.
9. Treatment schedule: Schedule subsequent laser hair removal sessions based on the hair growth cycle. Typically, treatments are spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart to target hair in different stages of growth. The number of sessions required varies depending on the individual, but multiple treatments are usually necessary to achieve optimal results.
10. Follow-up and maintenance: Monitor the client's progress throughout the treatment course. After the initial series of treatments, periodic maintenance sessions may be needed to address any new hair growth or fine regrowth.
