About DJ Spinz
DJ Spinz is a cornerstone of Toronto’s jungle and drum & bass movement. Active since the early 1990s, he built his reputation on lightning-fast mixing, fierce scratching, and an unstoppable energy behind the decks. Known for both technical skill and crowd-rocking selections, Spinz quickly became a regular at legendary Toronto raves by promoters like Syrous, Destiny, and Hullabaloo, often appearing alongside icons such as Capital J, Mystical Influence, and Sniper.
Spinz’s mixtapes were essential to the Toronto rave experience, passed hand-to-hand and played endlessly on boom boxes and car stereos. Classics like Selection Dark, Rumpshaker, Ain’t No Playa Like…, and Digg It (voted Tribe Magazine’s “Tape of the Year” in 1997) helped define the sound of Canadian jungle. His tag-team tape with Capital J, XXX (1999), remains a fan favorite — a raw, upfront jungle mix that captured the energy of Toronto’s underground at its peak.
Beyond the decks, Spinz helped shape the culture itself. In 2002 he co-founded Soul In Motion, a promotion crew dedicated to keeping drum & bass alive in Toronto. Over the years SIM brought international heavyweights like Makoto, Sigma, Danny Byrd, and the Brookes Brothers to the city for the first time, while giving local DJs a platform to shine. From his early work at Eastern Bloc Records to his role as art director for Sudden Def Recordings, Spinz has always pushed the music forward.
Respected at home and abroad, Spinz has shared stages with drum & bass legends including Fabio, Dillinja, and Andy C, while touring across Canada, the U.S., and Europe. His contributions to the scene are described as “absolutely unparalleled” — and decades later, he continues to inspire new generations of ravers and DJs with the same fire that made his name in the first place.
Whether it’s a classic mixtape or a live set, DJ Spinz represents the sound and spirit of Toronto jungle: relentless energy, turntable mastery, and a deep love for the music.
