From Sundance Dreams to Pixar Magic: How Mike Jones Found His Path at IndieWire's Filmmaking Summit

At IndieWire’s first-ever Future of Filmmaking Summit in Los Angeles, screenwriter Mike Jones, co-writer of Pixar’s “Soul” and creator of the upcoming “Inside Out” spin-off, “Dream Productions,” sat down with IndieWire Editor-in-Chief Dana Harris-Bridson for an inspiring conversation about his unique career journey. Jones began his career in New York in the 1990s with a dream familiar to many indie filmmakers: premiering his work at Sundance. His vision was so clear that he kept a bottle of champagne ready to celebrate his big debut. “I had a bottle of champagne in my refrigerator that was purely going to be opened when I got into Sundance,” he shared, reflecting on the high hopes he had for his early scripts. However, like so many filmmakers, Jones learned that the road to industry success often diverges from initial dreams. Despite his Sundance goal going unfulfilled, Jones eventually carved a new path for himself, joining Pixar’s senior creative team and contributing to some of its most beloved films.

During the discussion with Harris-Bridson, Jones highlighted the pivotal moment when he realized that festival glory wasn’t the only route to success. In fact, his entry into Pixar wasn’t typical. “Pixar doesn’t hire animation writers; they hire writers who know how to string a story together,” he explained. Pixar’s commitment to finding storytellers with a strong sense of character and drama, rather than solely those with animation experience, allowed Jones to bring his fresh perspective to projects like “Incredibles 2,” “Toy Story 4,” and “Soul.”

Jones candidly recounted his initial hesitation when Pixar approached him. At that time, he was saying “no” to various writing jobs, finding them unaligned with the complex characters he wanted to develop. But Pixar’s approach offered him the chance to explore his creative strengths and push boundaries in ways he hadn’t imagined. Pixar wanted authenticity, depth, and characters that audiences could fully believe in — values that deeply resonated with Jones.

The panel concluded with Jones encouraging aspiring filmmakers to remain open to unexpected opportunities. “I thought I belonged in independent film, and it really didn’t turn out like that. And I love where I’m at right now,” he remarked, emphasizing that success in the industry can come from unconventional paths.
