A discussion of the 1961 urbanism classic The Death and Life of Great American Cities, by Jane Jacobs. While I share a strong dislike of suburbia and a very strong preference for living in a 15-minute walkable city where people aren’t slaves to their cars, some of her ideas and the way she presents material have become inevitably dated. I also disagreed with a number of points, like the idea that buildings MUST physically stand out in purpose and that people who’ve moved on up will want to stay in the old neighborhood instead of getting fancier new digs elsewhere.
