The French philosopher and author, Albert Camus, was best known for his existentialist novels, which earned him the 1957 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his important literary production, which with clear-sighted earnestness illuminates the problems of the human conscience in our times." After spending the New Year's holiday in Provence, France, Camus and his friend and publisher’s nephew, Michel Gallimard, were returning to Paris in Gallimard's luxurious Facel Vega FV2 on January 4, 1960. On a long straight stretch of the Route nationale 5 in the small town of Villeblevin, just over 65 miles outside Paris, Gallimard lost control of the car which veered into a tree. Gallimard was gravely wounded and died days later. Camus, who was in the front passenger seat, died instantly. "I do not want to believe that death is the gateway to another life," he once wrote. "For me, it is a closed door. I do not say it is a step we must all take, but that it is a horrible and dirty adventure."
