France, the Paris Observatory. Inside the 17th century building with shots of statues and close ups of old astronomical equipment in the museum collection: "quarter-circles", spy glasses, telescope, Fresnel lens and other pieces on a display table.
New observatory installation site at Meudon. Large telescope of Janssen housed in the cupola. Close up of 83 centimetre lens. Telescope used to observe and photograph the sun. Outside is a giant 36 metre solar telescope resembling a tower. It has a focal length of 45 meters. Protective dome on top shelters the two quartz mirrors which capture the image of the sun. Pictures of the sun projected to a diameter of 40 centimetres show the sun spots. View of computer room. Close up of IBM mainframe with lots of blinking lights. Close up of golf ball printer at work.
