Listen to the sounds of White storks (Ciconia ciconia) clattering their bills at the nest.

White storks use sound to communicate but the way they make these sounds is very interesting. They rarely vocalise, opting to quickly open and close their bill to create a rapid series of knocking sounds. These are amplified by the throat pouch which acts as a resonator, and the timbre of the clattering can change as well as the rhythm.

They make a lot more noise in the mating season than at any other time of the year. This recording was captured around June time, a few months after mating. Most white storks nest on electricity poles right by very busy roads, so finding a good location to record them took many days of exploring. Even so, you can still hear anthropogenic noise from the village which was impossible to get away from.
