The First Matabele War took place from 1893 to 1894 in present-day Zimbabwe. This conflict involved the British South Africa Company and the Ndebele (Matabele) Kingdom. The Ndebele King, Lobengula, initially sought to avoid full-scale war due to the potential devastation European-produced weapons could inflict on traditional Matabele impis, or units of warriors, attacking in mass formations. It is estimated that Lobengula commanded around 80,000 spearmen and 20,000 riflemen armed with Martini-Henry rifles, which were considered modern weapons at the time. However, insufficient training hindered the effective use of these firearms by the Ndebele forces
